Tu BiShvat (also written as Ti BiShavat, Tu B’shevat, Tu B’Shevat, Tu Bishvat) is the Jewish new year for trees. It occurs on the 15th day (“tu”) of the month of Shvat.
In ancient times, the age of a tree determined the time of the fruit harvest, an important date in the agricultural cycle. Nowadays, Tu BiShvat is an environmental holiday and reminds us of our duty to care for the natural world.
This year we will celebrate Tu BiShvat after Shabbat morning services on Saturday, February 4. We’ll enjoy a brief lunch, a Seder with the ceremonial foods, and a discussion of an environmental topic led by Dave Cohen.
