Tu BiShvat (also written as Ti BiShavat, Tu B’shevat, Tu B’Shevat, Tu Bishvat) is the Jewish new year for trees. It occurs on the 15th day (“tu”) of the month of Shvat.

This day marks the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing. In ancient times, the age of a tree determined the time of the fruit harvest, an important date in the agricultural cycle. Nowadays, Tu BiShvat is an environmental holiday and reminds us of our duty to care for the natural world.

We mark the 15th of Shvat by eating fruits which are singled out by the Torah. For this event, we will celebrate with a special Seder followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner. Please bring a special dish that contains grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives. dates, wheat, barley. You can check out some fun holiday food ideas here. Bring your creative dishes on a beautiful colorful serving plate to make our meal festive.

This year we will celebrate Tu BiShvat on Wednesday, February 12. RSVP here.

Our Green Team recommends the NJ Tree Foundation if you’d like to make a donation in honor of Tu BiShvat. You can go direct to their donation page.
