Our next entry in our Jewish Film Discussion Series looks at two films: “Doing Jewish: The Story from Ghana,” and “Re-Emerging: The Jews of Nigeria.” This pair of documentaries explores the inspiring Jewish journeys of communities in West Africa. Rabbi Moshe Saks and his daughter, Eliana Saks, will be our guest speakers. Eliana and her Nigerian husband Shmuel are featured on the cover of the July/August issue of Hadassah magazine. Rabbi Saks will bring a personal perspective to the discussion.
Doing Jewish: The Story from Ghana: A tiny community in rural Ghana recently discovered that the religion they have been practicing for centuries is Judaism. Filmmaker Gabrielle Zilkha explores their story from isolation to global connection and the challenges and rewards they face along the way.
Re-Emerging: The Jewish of Nigeria: Like many in Nigeria, Shmuel consistently heard that the Igbo people were once Jews. When an Internet cafeĢ opens in his town, he begins to research this further and starts a journey that eventually leads him to a community of thousands of Jews. Yet, despite the Igbo Jews’ passionate commitment to Judaism with few resources, they are often met with outside scorn, family rejection and violence.
Both films are available on Amazon. View the films in advance and join the session for a discussion. RSVP to Bob Krovetz for the Zoom links to participate in the discussion.
This event was rescheduled from December.
