In the fall of 2021, when we learned that three Afghan brothers had fled Kabul to escape Taliban death threats and were making their way to central New Jersey, our Temple Beth-El community stepped forward. We launched a refugee resettlement committee and helped the brothers settle into their new home. In February 2023, our community welcomed to Hillsborough an extended family of 12 Syrian refugees, who fled violence and war in search of freedom and safety.
Over the years, TBE’s refugee resettlement committee and many volunteers have provided a wide range of support for these families; they all have become beloved members of our community. The Afghan brothers have been granted asylum, and the Syrian families have submitted asylum applications that allow them to live in the US legally.
Sadly, our immigrant friends need us more than ever. They fear the anti-immigration policies being enforced nationally and, despite their legal status, the terrifying possibility of seizure, detention and deportation. We need to step up once again!
Temple Beth-El’s refugee resettlement committee invites you to attend a virtual information session on Wednesday, February 25 at 7:00 PM to learn about our new READY FOR ACTION initiative.
There are many components of our READY FOR ACTION initiative, so we need many volunteers to help make this work! The teams include emergency response; family support; work and school; legal services; social media; and legislative outreach. Our plan is to put processes in place, so if an ICE detention occurs, we are prepared to help and support the family in the aftermath. Our prayer is that we will never need to activate this plan.
Please register for our virtual information session here. Once you register, we will send you the Zoom link.

May we remain a caring community that serves as a source of light, strength, and comfort for those we care so deeply about.
