How to Be More Forgiving and the Role of Music in Facilitating Introspection Through the High Holy Days
Two In-person Sessions – Tuesdays, September 17 and 24 at 7:00 p.m.
Maimonides had a lot to say about the hard realities of forgiving those who have wronged us and seeking forgiveness from those we have wronged. He asked these questions: At what point are we off the hook for asking forgiveness? Are there sins beyond redemption? To what extent do we have control over our personalities – do we really have free will? How important is sincerity when apologizing – should we apologize even if we can’t do so in our hearts? Maimonides lived over 800 years ago and was one of our greatest thinkers. He speaks to us still, as if he’s standing right next to us today.
Learn about the power of music to heal, provide catharsis and move us to take action in our lives. Discussion will draw on neuroscience and our understanding of the brain, the traditions of the music of the High Holy Days, the musical structure of that music and a dive into the patterns of Ashkenazi chant based on Jewish time known as the ‘nusach.’
