Philip Roth was 7 years old, living in Newark, NJ when Franklin Roosevelt was up for election for a third term in 1940. Charles Lindbergh also ran for President that year. What would have happened had Lindbergh, a Nazi sympathizer, won? What would have happened to Jews in America had the President of the United States forsaken the foundational values of America? When past enemies become friends and past friends become enemies and anti-Semitism increases exponentially, Jews would have been in a precarious situation and the entire world would have become unsafe. Quite a piece of fiction!
Rabbi Katz will be giving a book review on The Plot Against America on May 6 at 7:00 p.m. You won’t need to have read the book but if you do, the evening will be that much more interesting. No RSVP required.
